Fair Trade Fortnight March 13, 2006Posted by Muhajirah in Activism, General.
Insha’Allah you are all well,
I’m a bit late in blogging about it, but last week was the beginning of fair trade fortnight. Two whole weeks of supporting the fair trade movement and from there making a habit of buying fair trade stuff (Insha’Allah).
I’ve been thinking about all this fair trade business for sometime now and i pray that Allah gives me the strength to support it. Sounds like a silly dua, but I tell you it’s not easy. Just think, if I got all fair tradey (?) I would have to stop eating all other chocolates (well I don’t eat chocolate neway – before u call me mad I am boycotting Israeli goods, and they happen to basically own the chocolate industry not to mention coffee as well) I would have buy stuff at 10x the price of a non fair trade items. I would have to search dozens of shops if I wanted a bottle of juice or something. And its not just food, what about clothes? How many shops sell fair trade clothes?
Why bother? Well read up on the subject. I swear all Muslims should get swotted up on capitalist companies and multi national corporations! MacDonald’s, goes to the Amazon or somewhere, destroys the rainforest to breed cows. Nike have factories in India and other Asian countries, where little kids slave away for 3p a day while they sell their products for £’s! Islaam is about fairness, equality and justice, so why do Muslims support these companies? Maybe we can’t commit ourselves to fully support fair trade, but shouldn’t we at least try?
I want to share with you something I read the other day… it’s sort of related.
Amount of money owed by the worlds poorest nations: $422 billion
Amount of money spent by Western nations on military every year:
Amount of money all African countries need for weekly foreign debt (interest only): $200 million
Amount of money the UN estimates is needed to curb Aids epidemic in Africa: $15 billion
Amount of money African nations pay to service their debts each year (interest only): $13.5 billion
Percent of debt the World Bank and IMF can afford to cancel: 100%
Percent of debt the World Bank and IMF agreed to cancel: 33%
Statistics – one dude once said there are lies, damn lies and statistics. I am slightly weary of the above but Subhan’Allah just look at the figures!!??!!
There are ppl in Africa that are dying every 3/4 seconds because of aids, poverty and starvation. These deaths can be prevented if western, developed countries would make trade more fairer, if they cancelled the debt (NB All indebted countries paid off their debt yonks ago, however due to interest they are having to pay back triple the amount of money they borrowed in the first place – Now do you now why Allah (swt) has forbidden riba?)
I pray that Allah (swt) returns this Ummah back to tawheed so we can strengthen and establish an Islaamic state. Only by Allah’s laws can the world work in harmony. Man made laws will destroy us both in this life and the next!
