Asalaamu ’Alaikum
Insha’Allah you are all well,

Considering the majority of Muslims are non Arabs, it makes me wonder how many of us know the language of al-Qur’aan – Arabic. How many of are learning, or taking active steps to learn? How many of us even want to, or think that is important to learn this language?

Arabic is such a beautiful language. How can it not be, when the words of Allah (swt), Lord of the Worlds were revealed to the Prophet (saw) in Arabic? How can it not then be a superior to all other languages?

Imagine, if reading the translation of the Qur’aan can move us to tears, if by simply listening to the recitation of the Qur’aan can instil fear and love for Allah (swt) in our heart – this when we don’t understand what is being read, what will it be like when we comprehend the words of Allah? When we understand Al Qur’aan in its revealed language? Subhan’Allah, how much are we missing out on?

The Qur’aan, the greatest book on earth is in the Arabic language, why then are we not striving to learn Arabic? Not only are that but some of the greatest scholarly works are in Arabic. Ibn Kathir’s tafsir – yes we have an English translation, but it is an abridged version, al Bukhari and Muslim. Do the translations really do justice? Would we not benefit from studying hadith in Arabic? How many masses of great works are we deprived from because we don’t know Arabic?

Historians say that one of the reasons the Ottoman period faced so much disunity was because they didn’t make Arabic the official language of the Islamic state, and one of the reasons the earlier caliphates succeeded in uniting the Ummah was because they valued the Arabic language and along with the deen, Arabic was what tied the Arabs, Persians, Indians etc together.

I advise every Muslim, to learn Arabic, not only is it such a beautiful language to learn, but you will enjoy it so much and most importantly it will benefit you, with regards to your deen.

I pray that Allah (swt) gives me the chance to become fluent in the language of al-Qur’aan. That He (swt) increases me in knowledge and gives me greater understanding of the deen.

Wasalaam
